Nanotechnology Standardization Activities – Domestic and Global

Research and development at the nanoscale are leading to enormous growth in the number of publications and products devoted to knowledge and applications of nanotechnology.  As progress in this cross-sector field continues to accelerate, it is important to coordinate the timely development of voluntary consensus standards that will meet identified needs related to nanotechnology research, development, and commercialization.

Heather Benko, manager of nanotechnology standardization activities at the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), will provide an overview as to how the Institute is facilitating interaction among stakeholders in the domestic and international arenas to develop standards-based solutions for nanotechnology issues.

ANSI plays an integral role in the international standards and conformity assessment community.  As sole U.S. representative to the ISO and IEC, the Institute promotes the use of U.S-based technology internationally and advocates U.S. policy and technical positions with respect to international and regional standards and conformity assessment activities.  Ms. Benko will discuss the ongoing activities of the ANSI-Accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO/TC 229 on Nanotechnologies, which include formulating and promoting all U.S. positions and proposals relevant to this ISO Technical Committee.  She will also provide updates on ongoing U.S.-domiciled nanotechnology standards development activities, including the work of IEEE and ASTM.

Dr. Brent Segal of Nantero will present on the activities of the IEC TC 113, Nanotechnology Standardization for Electrical and Electronic Products and Systems.  Dr. Segal is the Technical Advisor to the U.S. National Committee TAG to IEC/TC 113.

ANSI is a not-for-profit membership organization that brings together organizations from both the private and public sectors dedicated to furthering U.S. and international voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessments. ANSI accredits national standards developing organizations and approves American National Standards. It is the sole U.S. representative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), via the U.S. National Committee.
